About the event
Kōloa Landing Emergency Coral Restoration
October 3–13, 2026 | Hanakā‘ape Bay / Kōloa Landing, Kauaʻi
Following Hurricane Lowell, extensive reef damage was documented along Kauaʻi’s south and west shores, including significant impacts at Hanakā‘ape Bay / Kōloa Landing. Large numbers of living coral colonies were displaced, overturned, or broken from the reef, creating an opportunity for time-sensitive restoration while many of these corals remain viable.
Beginning October 3, Hoʻomalu Ke Kai / Kauaʻi Coral Restoration Nursery (HKK/KCRN) and partners will begin a coordinated emergency restoration effort at Kōloa Landing to locate, document, stabilize, and reattach viable storm-displaced corals.
This work is being conducted as part of the Hawaiʻi Emergency Reef Response Network (HERR) statewide hui effortunder NOAA Restoration Center Special Activity Permit (SAP) # 2027-18 and applicable State of Hawaiʻi authorizations.
