About the event

This particular spot has been a focus area for us the last few years. It’s out of sight and out of mind and experiences some of the MOST marine debris than anywhere else on Kaua‘i. The funneling spots for marine trash and debris (like this one) are excellent places to target for cleanups since the close proximity/density is easier to capture all at once than in the ares where trash is scattered in a ‘few and far between’ fashion. We often talk about how exactly marine debris reaches our shores and where it comes from based on the spot we’re at during our cleanups and have also discussed such in past posts. The main takeaway is that marine debris (particularly, the long lasting stuff like plastic) will perpetually arrive on our Windward shorelines until the day the world stops using plastic. This may sound daunting but it is a harsh reality that we as a global society need to be able to digest so that real change can be worked toward to #TurnOFFThePlasticTap 🙏 We are grateful for the opportunity to work on some local solutions to manage plastic waste and marine debris on our small island home.. Using @matohascience and @realpreciousplastic machinery, we’re able sort out as much plastic waste from the community and environment as possible to #upcycle and save it from further burdening our overfilling landfill. While this is a small local effort to combat a much larger global issue, we still 100% encourage anyone in any possible way to #avoidplastic, or as a general rule of thumb, avoid using/buying anything that will outlive you by generations. If we do what we can do every day, we’re always in motion into solving some of society’s biggest issues one day. And, of course, #ItTakesAVillage along the way. Do what you can do by either coming to our cleanup, cleaning up on your own, or choosing to forgo plastic for an entire day/week/month/year! The possibilities and solutions are often up to us🙌🏿🙌🏻🙌🏾🙌🏼🙌🏽 #BeTheChange #ProtectTheOcean #ProtectWhatYouLove
