About the event

The best day of the year is right around the corner #WorldOceanDay! We are so stoked to team up with @malamamahaulepu @kauaioceanawareness and @seasportdivers for this @worldoceanday cleanup at a super special coastline area. “Māhāʻulepū, Kauai is an irreplaceable heritage place. Revealing 5 million years of continuous history, this undeveloped watershed is a living museum; and a research site and habitat for rare and endangered plants and animals where significant events in Hawaiian history played out. It is sacred and legendary to Native Hawaiians, many of whom are connected to this area by ancestral ties and by continuing cultural uses including fishing and gathering. In a rapidly urbanizing region, Māhāʻulepū is an increasingly important piece of rare Hawaiian wilderness, which is under constant threat of commercial development, industrial agriculture, and resulting pollution.” - @malamamahaulepu As we #ProtectTheOcean around this special place, we may feel some sort of connection to those who’ve come before us and did the same, often for the same purpose. To continue a symbiotic relationship between us humans and the natural resources we have always depended on to survive as a species. We also have reason to believe our ancestors didn’t really need a holiday or special day on the calendar to protect their natural resources. It was intertwined with every day life. There are still a few cultures practicing their versions of circular “no-waste” systems in perpetuity, because they’ve worked and allowed so many past generations to continue on another lifetime on Earth. Let’s keep that kind of legacy alive. Details for the event: Meeting at 8:30am at fort parking outside CJM stables. Cleanup from 9am - 11am. Marine debris sorting and weigh in / ocean plastic art with @kauaioceanawareness 11am - 1pm. We’ll have snacks and refreshments for all cleanup participants, but please be sure to bring plenty of water in a reusable container and wear reef safe sunscreen. See you there to #HoomaluKeKai! #KauaiOceanAwareness #MalamaMahaulepu #SeasportDivers #OceanCleanup #BeachCleanup #OceanConservation #BeTheChange #EveryDayIsOceanDay
